RANDOM COURSES
05 June – 12 August, 2006
Random Courses brought the tradition of dry stone wall/fence construction into a contemporary context through the use of commercial household product packaging. Modeled on a particular method of wall construction, this installation utilizes the detritus of our consumer culture and recycles it to remake the traditional stone fence. Toothpaste, candy, tissue, cereal and cracker boxes are filled with earth and substituted for the stones creating a protective yet tenuous barrier between the street and the home. Gradually fading and disintegrating over the course of the exhibition, Random Courses reflects the conflict between an environmental conscience and the lure of the advertising aesthetic.
